About Hamilton
Hamilton is a port city in Southern Ontario, on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, just west of the Greater Toronto Area, about half way between Toronto and the Niagara region. Hamilton is the centre of a densely populated and highly industrialized area in Southern Ontario often referred to as the Golden Horseshoe. Hamilton has just over half million residents. The current City of Hamilton was formed in 2001 by the amalgamation of several municipalities, including the old city of Hamilton, and also the smaller towns of Ancaster, Dundas, and Stoney Creek. Today, Hamilton is the ninth largest urban area in Canada and the 3rd largest in Ontario (after the Greater Toronto Area just to the East . also known by the acronym the GTA . and the Greater Ottawa Area). Traditionally, Hamilton.s economy has been led by the steel and heavy manufacturing industry. Stelco and Dofasco . two major steel manufacturing company from the recent past . were among Hamilton.s major employers as they had their headquarters here. Procter & Gamble was also a major employer in Hamilton. As a result, there used to be many manufacturing jobs in Hamilton, as well as engineering jobs. In the past decade, however, there has been an increase in the share of service jobs in Hamilton, specifically healthcare jobs and health research jobs. The Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation employs some 10,000 people in Hamilton. Hamilton is also home of the McMaster University. As a result, there are many teaching jobs in Hamilton. Many Hamilton residents actually work outside of the city of Hamilton, and commute to jobs in Oakville, Burlington, jobs in Mississauga, and even jobs in Toronto. Sales Jobs and Administrative Jobs also account for a sizeable share of Hamilton.s employment market. Like in the rest of Ontario, the provincial government is trying to promote the creation of green jobs in Hamilton.
